Cable Repair for Salmon Creek's Late-80s Garage Doors

Salmon Creek homes built around 1988 run galvanized lift cables on extension spring setups that fray at the drum. We drive out from Vancouver to replace them.

Diagnosis first, then the fix

How We Fix It

Most garage doors in Salmon Creek went up around 1988, which puts them squarely in the extension-spring era - two springs stretched along the horizontal tracks, with a lift cable looped through a pulley at the bottom bracket and anchored to a drum up top. That cable does the real work of holding the door's weight when the springs are tensioned, and on a house this age it's usually the original galvanized cable, never replaced. We start by releasing spring tension safely, pull the old cable off the drum and pulley, and run a new one sized to match your door's weight and track length. If the drum or bottom bracket shows wear from the old cable biting into it, we replace those too - a new cable on a chewed-up drum will fail again inside a year. We test the door through a full cycle before we leave, checking that both cables carry even tension so the door doesn't rack sideways in the tracks.

What You Are Seeing

A frayed or snapped cable on a door this age usually shows up as one corner of the door hanging lower than the other, or the door refusing to open past a few inches before it binds in the track. Sometimes you'll see the actual strands of wire unraveling near the bottom bracket - that's corrosion or fatigue, and once it starts it doesn't stop on its own. On extension-spring doors, a broken cable can let that side of the door drop hard and fast, which is why we don't recommend running the opener to try to force it. If the door won't move at all and you hear a loud bang beforehand, that's more likely a spring than a cable, but the fix starts the same way: killing power to the opener and leaving the door alone until we get there.

Booking a Visit

We cover Salmon Creek from our Vancouver location, about six miles south. Call and describe what you're seeing - which side is sagging, whether the door moves at all, whether you've already tried the opener. That tells us what to load on the truck before we head out, so we're not making a second trip for a part we didn't know we needed. See our Salmon Creek service area page for what else we cover out this way.

How Long You Are Without the Door

A straightforward cable swap on a single door is a same-visit job once we're on site - we're not waiting on special-order parts for standard cable lengths. Where it runs longer is if the drum or bottom bracket is damaged, or if the door's been forced open with a broken cable and the track has bent, which adds inspection and realignment time. We can't give you an exact window over the phone before we've seen the hardware, but a clean cable replacement doesn't leave your car stuck in the garage overnight.

What It Costs

We don't post flat prices for cable work because it depends on whether it's a single cable or both, whether the drum needs replacing, and the cable gauge your door's weight calls for. What we can tell you is that a cable-only repair on an extension-spring door, without drum or bracket damage, is one of the more affordable calls we make. If a tech gets on site and finds a damaged drum, bent track, or a spring that's also due for replacement, we'll walk you through that before doing any work you didn't ask for.

Parts We Carry

Our trucks stock standard galvanized lift cables in the common gauges used on residential extension-spring doors, along with replacement drums and pulleys for the wear that usually accompanies a snapped cable on an older setup. What we don't keep on hand is oddball cable lengths for custom or oversized doors - those we order in, and that's the one real delay on this kind of job. Houses in this part of the service area are mostly standard single and double doors from the late 80s and early 90s, so the stock parts cover nearly everything we run into here.

Questions

Frequently asked

Straight answers about garage door repair in Vancouver. Still unsure? Ask us directly.

Why did my cable snap if the door still looks fine otherwise?

On a house built around 1988, the original galvanized cable has had three decades of cycling through the drum and pulley. It wears from the inside - strands fray where it bends around the drum, long before the rest of the door shows any problem. One frayed cable doesn't mean the opener, track, or panels are failing too.

Is it safe to open the door manually if one cable is broken?

No. With one cable gone, the remaining spring tension is unbalanced and the door can drop unevenly or come off the track if you force it. Disconnect the opener, leave the door where it is, and call rather than trying to lift it by hand.

Do you carry cables for older Salmon Creek homes on the truck?

Standard galvanized cables for extension-spring doors - the setup common on homes built around 1988 - are stocked on our trucks. Oversized or custom door cables sometimes need to be ordered, which we'll flag before starting the job.
